Nekane is motherless and, at twenty-six, still childless. In Jendea, where motherhood grants not only status, but literal power against the evil spirit-beings called the Unborn, this makes her doubly disadvantaged.
Then Nekane discovers a fatal crack in the Mothers’ mental protection, exposing herself to the Unborn in the process. Her every word becomes suspect, and her warnings go unheeded. She is exiled, cast out into a land where the Unborn are worshiped as gods.
Only with the unlikely help of one of the Unborn can she save her family and reclaim her life.
